What is an Ingrown Toenail?

An ingrown toenail is a curvature of the nail down the side of the toe into the skin. This causes pain and discomfort and, in many cases, can result in infection.

The most common causes of Ingrown Toenails are:

  • Curved nails
  • Fungus nail infection
  • Family history of ingrown toenails
  • Poor choice of shoes, or shoe pressure
  • Foot trauma (injury) to the nail

Treatment

Conservative Ingrown Toenail treatment requires the use of a special nail-cutting instrument on a portion of the nail, and there are other treatments to consider if the area has become infected, or if the ingrown toenail reoccurs.
